Sokoto State is now free from wild polio virus, Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto said at the weekend.

Ahmed, who is the state deputy governor as well as the chairman Task Force Committee on Polio Eradication and Improvement On Routine Immunization made the declaration during the state polio monthly review meeting.

According to a statement by Abubakar Bawa, the Press Secretary to the deputy governor, no new case of wild polio virus has been recorded in the state within the last two years.

While stressing that it was an indication that the state is polio free, the deputy governor attributed the progress recorded in that direction to the collective contributions of all relevant stakeholders.

“This feat, no doubt was achieved because of the seriousness on the part of the government, the ulamas, parents, guardians as well as development partners. The state government has always been forth coming in giving it’s counter part funds to polio eradication initiative.

“Therefore, we need to continue with the awareness campaign among both parents, guardians and all stakeholders on the need to sustain the routine immunisation against all child killer diseases.

“We need to honestly sustain the routine immunization for us to a more healthy society.”

According to Ahmed Aliyu, Nigeria is equally polio free hence no fresh case has been reported within the last two years.

He also appealed to the people of the state and Nigerians at large to collectively work together on the need for a sustained healthy society.
