The Ondo State Government has started a training programme for health workers across 18 Local Government Areas, ahead of the commencement of the Contributory Health Scheme in the state.
Speaking on the training programme in Akure, capital of the state, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro, explained that, with the health scheme, which is aimed at achieving universal health coverage, there would be an increase in the number of health facilities in the state, hence the need to scale up the capacity of health workers for better service delivery.
He said the training was necessary because the state government was guarding against any error in the medical process, which could endanger the lives of the patients.
The commissioner said, “Customer satisfaction is the driving force of the Ondo State Contributory Health Scheme and the government will do everything possible to ensure the state achieves universal health coverage.”
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary, Ondo State Primary Health care Development Agency, Dr Francis Akanbiemu, noted that medical service was incomplete without essential drug management.
Akanbiemu disclosed that gaps were noticed in drug management and needed to be filled by training the critical mass of professionals who would in turn train other health workers.
He added that the training was a follow-up to a previous one that took place across the state in July.
In his goodwill message, the Programme Coordinator, Nigeria State Health Investment Project, Dr Paulinus Omode, stressed the role of Pharmaceutical Services in medical management, saying there was a need for training and retraining of health workers so as to enable them to be in tune with global best practices in their various fields.
